A few of Bill Burke's regulars took part in a run reminiscent of the fun runs that Bill took part in for many decades.

THE BILL BURKE CLASSIC 2010

Six runners took part in the Bill Burke Classic on the 17th of April.  Conditions were fairly warm, but the river course provided plenty of shade along the 4.1km lap.

In a handicapped start, Matthew Goodger and Trevor Hawksworth were our frontmarkers, with David Jones starting a minute later.  Sam Wenban off 2:24, Damien Bruneau off 3:00 and Danny Hawksworth off 5:10 made up the rest of the field.

At the Afton st footbridge, David Jones had already made up the ground on Trevor and Matthew, so was looking the favourite by then.  Damien Bruneau had made up significant ground on Sam Wenban, while at the back of the field, Danny Hawksworth wasn't going to see anyone until near the end.

At the 3km mark Jones had gone well clear of Trevor Hawksworth, who had opened up a slight gap on Matthew.  Damien had passed Sam and was about to catch the frontmarkers.  It was there that Danny turned the corner and suddenly saw the whole field stretched out in front of him.  He passed Sam, while Damien passed Matthew and Trevor.  Danny had Damien in his sights and caught him with 400m to go, but couldn't get close to David.

David took out the event, with Danny and Damien taking the minor places.  Trevor came in 4th, with Matthew keeping the next generation at bay, with 2008 Fitzgerald Cup Winner Sam in 6th place.

Thanks to David and Raylene Wenban for timekeeping and was good to see Percy Lanciana make an appearance on his bike.
